1996 Activities

Minnesota E-Democracy plans to build on its successes to involve more people in the political process in 1996.

• Politics Discussion Group: MN-Politics@mr.net--the on-line discussion forum--has continued and has included discussions on topics including taxes, ethics in government, school vouchers, the proposed outdoor Twins stadium, and the precinct caucuses.

• Access to Candidate and Election Information: The Minnesota Town Hall 1996 makes it easy for citizens to get on-line political information. It provides links to the official web sites of all candidates running state-wide in Minnesota, works with the League of Women Voters to provide voting and voter registration information and runs the 1996 on-line U.S. Senate debate.

• International Connections: Minnesota E-Democracy is associated with an international e-mail discussion group created to promote similar citizen based electronic democracy efforts around the world.

• Interactive Debate: Minnesota E-Democracy, with the help of the Minnesota League of Women Voters, will again host E-Debates for U.S. Senate candidates.

• Shared Electronic Discussion Space: This winter Minnesota E-Democracy plans to start a Minnesota public affairs discussion list that other groups can use for short (two to three week) organized discussions of specific issues.

• Mn-Democracy: A low volume electronic announcement list (four announcements per month) was started in January. It will be used both to announce new discussions happening in the shared discussion space and other events related to e-democracy and politics in Minnesota. It now has over 800 subscribers.
