Question 6: Tell us why you would make the best Governor for the State of Minnesota. What kind of "team" would you put together if elected? Also, what is the worst idea you have heard one of your opponents in this race support, and why? In your rebuttal include a response to this question: If you face an endorsement or primary challenge, why would you be the best candidate for your party? In closing, please include information on how interested readers can contact your campaign to volunteer and get more information. Dayton Rebuttal 6: The worst idea I've heard during this campaign is the proposal to again give a 20% property tax rebate with the current revenue windfall. It's tax policy from Dumb and Dumber! It's a mindless giveback, which gives the most to the richest. It makes no lasting changes to an unfair and overburdened property tax system. It addresses the past, rather than the future. I face a tough primary against well-known DFL candidates. They are honorable men and dedicated public servants. Yet we come from very different experiences. I didn't learn my politics at my family dinner table. My parents voted for Richard Nixon in 1960 and 1968; five years later I was the only Minnesotan on Nixon's Enemies List. I came to my convictions on my own. I have acted on them and stuck with them, whether they were popular or not. The next Governor will inherit a host of festering and expensive problems. I predict they will be exacerbated by far more difficult economic and fiscal conditions. As a result, the next Governor's decisions will be more difficult, less popular, yet far more determinative of our state's future. In crises, leaders lead; office holders just hold on. I know what public investments can do to improve the lives of our citizens. I know how to make them, from my thirty years in public service. I won't waffle on the tough issues. I won't coast on the status quo. I want Minnesota to be a better state for ourselves, our children, and future generations. It won't happen, unless we work hard and smart together. Let's get to work! In closing, I salute E-Democracy! I haven't met so many consecutive deadlines and counted words so carefully since high school! Well done, E-Democracy.
