Question 3: To what extent do you intend
to support investment in maintaining Minnesota’s highway system and expanding
its mass transit system given the age of the state’s highway system, population
and business growth, and the mass transit needs of an aging and dispersed
population?
BORRELL Rebuttal for Question 3
With so many of the candidates for
Governor in favor of forcing light
rail transit onto the Minnesota public,
I wonder why we don't have
light rail already. It's only
a great idea if the people of
Minnesota want light rail.
This looks like an excellent project
for a private sector transportation
company. Set them up as a monopoly
or conglomeration and support them
in complying with the environmental
problems they are bound to run
into. We make a commitment to private
enterprise and they make a
commitment to our customers, the citizens
of Minnesota. It would be
nice to have this transportation company,
be publicly traded so that
those of us who would use this system
could invest in it.
I have some trouble with Jesse Ventura's
idea of forcing or manipulating
downtown drivers by eliminating their
parking spaces. That seems like
more social engineering. Why
not provide an option and let the
citizens be free to choose what they
want? If Jesse's idea is so
weak that we have to force ridership,
then let's not go there.
Personally, I would take a train into
the cities, airport, capitol,
shopping center, stadium, arena, or
business areas if:
1. The schedules were every 15 to 30
minutes. (Assumes timely schedules)
2. The cost was reasonable.
Fares would amount to a little pocket
change.
3. The vehicles were safe.
4. The vehicles were clean.
5. The system was fast.
6. There were express and local vehicles
during high use hours.
Is that too much to ask? Maybe,
but in our proposals let's keep the
citizen's needs in mind. If
the system is not customer friendly and
convenient, then we have created another
government.
