Question 6: Tell us why you would make the best Governor for the State of Minnesota. What kind of "team" would you put together if elected? Also, what is the worst idea you have heard one of your opponents in this race support, and why? In your rebuttal include a response to this question: If you face an endorsement or primary challenge, why would you be the best candidate for your party? In closing, please include information on how interested readers can contact your campaign to volunteer and get more information. BENSON Response 6: I have the passion to serve, and I will make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people of Minnesota. People tell me they feel overtaxed, over-regulated, underestimated and underappreciated. I appreciate Minnesotans and will lead this state to a new level of greatness. My agenda is based on three principles dedicated to helping children and families, creating and maintaining safe neighborhoods and communities, and reducing taxes. As long as policymakers at all levels provide a clear mission, goals, and standards for students, I believe that state government should work to reduce its control. Parents and teachers can be trusted with the flexibility to create the best learning environment for students. Every Minnesotan has the right to be safe in their homes and on the street. Restorative justice and restitution are principles that we can apply for first time offenders so that they can return to society as productive citizens. I propose a series of tax cuts and measures to stop the growth of government while continuing to offer those services that are the essential core of government. We will enhance individual exemptions on state income taxes, cut the state sales tax, reform the property tax system, and place the Minnesota vehicle excise tax in the state's transportation account. Our government will be less intrusive and more efficient and accountable. Continuous quality improvement will ensure this happens. Leaders, who are of good character, respected for knowledge and wisdom, dedicated to service, and considered experts in their field, will serve in the Benson Administration. My team will respect citizens and be responsive to their ideas and needs. Listening, uniting, and serving people will not end after the November election. That is just the beginning. Minnesotans will know this: Joanne Benson says what she means and does what she says.
