Hubert H. Humphrey Response 4
Question 4: Specifically, how much money is it worth to keep the Twins baseball franchise in Minnesota, and what will you do as governor regarding the public financing of sports arenas?
I oppose the use of any taxpayer dollars to build stadiums that line the pockets of wealthy pro sports team owners. But this is a national problem where wealthy pro sports team owners hold cities hostage, make unreasonable demands of the taxpayers, and then threaten to leave. This has got to stop. As Attorney General, I've filed an anti-trust lawsuit against Major League Baseball to try and get at the root of this problem and save the Twins and other teams from leaving their communities. As Governor, I will bring together team owners, community leaders and business leaders to discuss how to keep our pro sports teams here--without mortgaging our other priorities. But let me be perfectly clear, we will not balance the demands of the Twins' owners on the backs of taxpayers.
