Chris Wright Response 2
Question 2: Evaluate the performance of the press in covering the on-going presidential scandal, the private lives of politicians, and please indicate whether or not you consider yourself a role model.
The sex scandal involving the president deserves coverage by the press and the private life of the president is a concern of the people. The possibility of extortion of a married individual in high office over such an issue is a real concern of the American people. However, if he were a single man and had engaged in such consensual sexual behavior it would be a private matter. I have always tried to conduct my life with probity. Unfortunately, we have to choose our public officials from the human race. I have no problem meeting standards of decency that would avoid dishonor to our state. I believe in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "Whenever the truth is injured, defend it. You are there on that spot, within hearing of that word, within sight of that action, as a witness, to the end that you should speak for it.
