Hubert H. Humphrey Response 2
Question 2: Evaluate the performance of the press in covering the on-going presidential scandal, the private lives of politicians, and please indicate whether or not you consider yourself a role model.
The press, and frankly Congress, have been so preoccupied with the presidential scandal that they have ignored the most pressing issues facing our country. We are in the midst of a farm crisis. We have Seniors who are choosing between meals and medication. We have 80,000 children who don't have health insurance. We have schools that are crumbling. We have a Medicare reimbursement system that is unfair. While these things may not grab headlines, they affect real people's lives. It's time for the press and Congress to get on with the people's business. When you are in the public life, I firmly believe you must provide political as well as moral leadership. I'm proud of the fact I've been married to my wife Lee for the past 35 years. My wife and my three children have always been my first priority. If some would could consider that lifestyle a role model, great. I consider it the right and decent way to live.
