Norm Coleman Response 2
Question 2: Evaluate the performance of the press in covering the on-going presidential scandal, the private lives of politicians, and please indicate whether or not you consider yourself a role model.
A vigorous and vigilant press is an integral part of a healthy democracy. However, when the press caters to the lowest common denominator - when we can no longer tell the difference between the evening news and the "Jerry Springer Show" - then the press has forsaken their role. The Clinton investigation and possible impeachment hearings are very serious matters. The press should provide the American public with as much relevant information as possible regarding the situation. But the press should focus on the alleged charges of perjury, obstruction of justice, abuse of power and not on the lurid and distasteful details. Public officials are role models, whether or not they so choose. We rightfully expect our elected officials to reflect the values we believe in: honesty, integrity, hard work and courage.
