I voted for President Clinton's budget plan, which balanced the budget fairly
and responsibly, without the extreme cuts in education, Medicare and the
environment like the Gingrich/Boschwitz budget proposal. I believe we can and
must balance the budget -- but not on the backs of seniors, students and
children. Rather, we should be cutting billions in special tax breaks for
wealthy corporations and individuals.
Since Minnesotans sent me to Washington, the federal deficit has declined 60
percent. While my opponent, Rudy Boschwitz, was in the Senate, the deficit
skyrocketed 561 percent. I believe there is much more to be done on deficit
reduction and it will be a priority of mine if Minnesotans give me the honor,
and I think they will, of serving another six years.
