As Governor will you propose legislation that will give free or subsidized health and dental insurance to uninsured National Guard members for serving their country?
Response from Mike Hatch:
Yes. Two years ago I proposed the ‘Citizen Soldiers Health Care Act’ to offer citizen soldiers returning from active duty one-month of coverage in the state employee health care plan for each month served on active duty. I also proposed legislation that would make families of deployed soldiers eligible for no-interest long-term loans to compensate for any financial losses incurred during service.

Response from Walt Brown:
I respect and admire National Guardsmen. I will do everything in my power to see that healthcare is provided to these individuals through the already existing low income state health care programs or the private sector that many of these individuals are employed by. In all efforts, I will stand by my policy of Quit Raising Taxes.

Response from Tim Pawlenty:
To better serve our returning veterans, I established a Military and Veterans Support Cabinet to implement initiatives to make Minnesota a national leader in supporting military members, veterans, and their families. The results include passage of a package of support programs and education benefits, a Veterans Summit to help reintegrate returning veterans, and efforts to expand access to Tricare health coverage.
