A special feature of the E-Debate is a special set of questions related to broadband and the Internet. Already with the video introductions we are demonstrating how broadband can be used as part of this civic engagement effort. What about the candidates, what ideas do they have about better services online?
The official short answer question is:
New Idea - Share a new idea on how your Administration will take advantage of broadband Internet or wireless communication to directly serve Minnesotans?
Candidate responses are limited to 70 words. “SAQs” and not directly rebuttable.

Short Answer Question 1 - New Idea - Share a new idea on how your Administration will take advantage of broadband Internet or wireless communication to directly serve Minnesotans?
Response from Peter Hutchinson:
Increase public input dramatically. Rudy Perpich used to say that you can’t make a difference in St. Paul, from St. Paul. The internet will offer Minnesotans an opportunity for consistent and on-going input into the direction of our state. My office and every state department will have easy-to-use sites where regular Minnesotans can ask questions, offer ideas and constructive criticism and discuss what’s going on at their capitol.
Short Answer Question 1 - New Idea - Share a new idea on how your Administration will take advantage of broadband Internet or wireless communication to directly serve Minnesotans?
Response from Ken Pentel:
This question implies everyone has internet. So this could be an exclusive outcome.
I would support online guest lectures from all colleges in MN freely available.
Short Answer Question 1 - New Idea - Share a new idea on how your Administration will take advantage of broadband Internet or wireless communication to directly serve Minnesotans?
Response from Leslie Davis:
I am concerned that all Minnesotans understand our money system. Where money comes from and how it gets into circulation and I would like to see the internet used to provide this information.
Short Answer Question 1 - New Idea - Share a new idea on how your Administration will take advantage of broadband Internet or wireless communication to directly serve Minnesotans?
Response from Walt Brown:
I will endeavor to encourage private enterprise subject to the premise of Quit Raising Taxes.
Short Answer Question 1 - New Idea - Share a new idea on how your Administration will take advantage of broadband Internet or wireless communication to directly serve Minnesotans?
Response from Tim Pawlenty:
Minnesota has made good progress on basic electronic services - examples include drivers and hunting licenses, taxes returns, and business/ occupational licenses. The next step is to advance e-service information. This includes the delivery of real-time, customized information, such as road conditions, employment statistics, criminal data or Medicaid prescriptions. Likewise, we can expand on-line learning (especially for geographically remote or struggling schools), increasing 24/7 one-stop services and improving security features.
Short Answer Question 1 - New Idea - Share a new idea on how your Administration will take advantage of broadband Internet or wireless communication to directly serve Minnesotans?
Response from Mike Hatch:
As governor, I will invest in technology for our schools and make sure that our students are ready to compete in the knowledge-based economy. I will also undertake a statewide broadband initiative to ensure that Minnesotans have access to affordable high-speed Internet. Through a public/private partnership, state government should coordinate a fiber-optic system that wires up regional cities and makes them attractive for technology development.
