Why join?

This non-profit, non-partisan online forum is being designed by and for Chicagoans to promote information exchange and discussion of local public issues.

1. Focus - If the topic is something on the agenda at city hall or related to a local event with city-wide implications this forum will be the place for in-depth, civil discussions.  If it is a state-wide, national, or global issue, we ask people to take those discussions to other appropriate places across the Net.

2. Relevancy - If you care about the future of Chicago, this is a place to hear and be heard. We need your help to introduce important topics that help us learn from one another and exchange diverse political viewpoints.

3. Facilitation - Unlike many other online political forums, our citizen volunteer facilitators will work in a balanced way keep things on track.  Our rules make our forums different and you make the information exchange useful.  In short, no personal attacks or one-on-one arguments.

4. Agenda-Setting - As we build a "who's who" subscriber list mixed with citizens like yourself, this forum will gain influence on the local media - like it has in every E-Democracy city.  This forum will become the most accessible source for story ideas in town.  We also know that hundreds of active citizens gathered anywhere always attract politicians. Those elected officials that are "wired-in" to the forum's power will join us as citizens and participate.

Rules

We use the basic E-Democracy rules framework that requires people sign their posts with their real name as well as their ward and/or neighborhood.  We limit each person to no more than two posts a day - we seek quality over quantity.

More Information

E-Democracy has active forums in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and Winona, Minnesota.  There are similar forums in cities like Knoxville, Tennessee and Arlington, Massachusetts

As residents of Chicago, we decided that it was our turn to use the Internet to strengthen our community and help citizens from across the political spectrum raise their voices on local issues.

E-Democracy, established in 1994, provides the trusted non-profit, non-partisan foundation required to bring diverse people together.  They provide a tested facilitation system and legal infrastructure that raises the quality of political discourse online.  For more on their model, see their Start an Online Commons article and their research and training resources.
