>Question #2 - November 2, 1994 >I am frustrated that Congress is not responsive to the needs of American families >throughout Minnesota and the nation. Working men and women work harder and >longer and get less. Government is the problem, not the solution. Decreasing the size of government and lowering taxes are two of the best ways Congress can help Minnesota families. Unfortunately, my opponent believes government should have a larger role in the lives of Minnesotans. One of the reasons Minnesota's men and women are working harder, longer and getting less is because Ann Wynia continues to increase taxes. In her 13 years in the Minnesota State Legislature, she voted to raise your taxes over 300 times -- those tax increases cost an average Minnesota family an additional $5,000. Ann Wynia would rather tax our families to death, spend their hard-earned dollars on government and then pass the bill on to our kids. I oppose this philisophy. In order to help Minnesota families, I introduced the "Families First" legislation which includes a $500 per child tax credit. My bill would return $500 million in tax relief annually to Minnesota families and make it easier for families to take care of their children -- rather than resorting to the government. "Families First" is based on the theory that families know best how to take care of themselves. By using cuts in federal spending to pay for family tax relief, my plan puts families first and leaves government bureaucrats behind. As your next U.S. Senator, I will continue to fight for Minnesota taxpayers by opposing increased taxes, enacting a balanced budget amendment, passing the line-item veto and establishing Congressional term limits -- to stop career politicians from losing touch with the very people they were elected to represent.
