QUESTION #1 REBUTTAL: I am frustrated that Congress cannot seem to get things done for working families today. Seniors struggle to pay for their prescriptions, working families struggle to make their mortgage while paying for child care, and all Minnesotans struggle to keep their children safe and in good, strong schools. Life should not have to be a struggle and working families should not have to hear empty phrases that promise the moon. Congressman Grams' "Contract with America" is just that; tax cuts for the wealthy, increased defense spending, and on top of it all, a balanced budget by the year 2002. We tried this in the 1980s and the result was an exploding deficit that our children will struggle to pay off for years to come. I do not want to go back. It is time to move forward. It is time to move forward to reduce -- not increase -- the deficit, by making tough choices and cutting spending. I have a record of making the tough choices to balance the budget. I am the only candidate in the U.S. Senate race that has actually balanced a budget. In fact, I balanced the Minnesota budget 13 years in a row. I have had to look people in the eye and say, " I am sorry we cannot afford your program." These are the kind of tough decisions Minnesotans expect from their elected officials. It is time to move forward on welfare reform. I have always believed that people are better off working than not working. As Commissioner of Human Services, I put into place one of the most far-reaching welfare reform measures in the nation which has garnered bi-partisan support.. It is time to move forward in this country on reforming the way government operates. We must put an end to the free gifts, meals, and entertainment to members of Congress. Congressman Grams voted to allow this to continue. It is time to move forward on health care reform. Health care reform has been pronounced dead for this session. But I believe we can find common ground to at least insure our children. I authored and passed legislation to do that in Minnesota, we should do that in Washington. I think you have a clear choice. If you want to go back to tax cuts for the wealthy, when the rich got richer, the poor poorer, and those of us in the middle paid the freight going both ways -- then you should vote for my opponent. If you think, like I do, that we can and must do better by Minnesota families, that we need to move ahead, not back, then you should vote for me. Because that is what I will be fighting for in the U.S. Senate. I ask for your vote on November 8th. Ann Wynia DFL Candidate for U.S. Senate
