>QUESTION #1 - October 31, 1994 >Americans want action on the problems of this country, and they want it now. >I have long been known as someone who can work with folks from all >backgrounds and get things done. I think we need more of that in Congress. >We need to move this country forward, not back. What Minnesotans want is change in Washington. They are tired of the tax and spend policies that Ann Wynia led thru the State House as Majority Leader. Ann Wynia has said before that we need to make tough choices. But the only tough choices that Ann Wynia is willing to make are who or what to tax next - not which federal spending programs need to be cut. When Ann Wynia was asked how she would cut the deficit, she hid behind Tim Penny to cover up her shameful record of wasting tax dollars. When asked whether she would support Tim Penny's own deficit reduction plan - which I voted for - she repeatedly ducked the question and later said "No." Minnesotans should ask Ann Wynia what tough choices she would make to replace the $90 billion in cuts that Tim Penny and I worked for. The answer is simple, but scary - she'd raise your taxes just like she did 300 times in the state legislature. >Congressman Grams' "Contract with America" is a budget buster. This is the same >"trickle-down economics" that tripled the national debt in the 1980s and left >middle class families picking up the tab. Because of about $200 billion in tax cuts >for the wealthy, and a boost in the nation's defense programs, this plan leaves a >one trillion dollar hole in the federal budget. In response to Ann Wynia's attack on my "Families First" plan to cut taxes for middle-class Minnesota families and reduce the deficit, I can only say that it is typical for Ann Wynia to oppose a plan that combines tax relief for families and fiscal responsibility. Ann Wynia says that my plan, which provides 90% of its tax relief to families making under $60,000 a year, would benefit the rich. The problem is that Ann Wynia thinks that everybody is rich. My "Families First" plan guarantees that we take care of our children by providing family tax relief today and deficit reduction for tomorrow. Ann Wynia would rather tax our families to death, spend their hard-earned dollars on government and then pass the bill on to our kids. Enough is enough! I'm not surprised that Ann Wynia is running away from her record. Who wouldn't? I will proudly run on my record, as I have throughout this campaign. I will continue to represent the taxpayers and Ann Wynia will continue to represent government. Fortunately, it's the taxpayers who vote, not government - and on November 8, Ann Wynia will learn that lesson. Rod Grams Candidate for U.S. Senate
