The following is U. S. Senator Paul Wellstone's (D-Minn.) endorsement of
    Ann Wynia:

U. S. Senator Paul Wellstone Endorses Ann Wynia
October 28, 1994

Rarely in my many years of political activism have I felt more
strongly about any candidate than I do about Ann Wynia and her
bid for the U.S. Senate. For me, this strong support comes down
to a question of character. Above and beyond the candidate's
position on the issues, is the core of the person. When you get
to know Ann Wynia, as I have, you find she is a person of
incredible integrity, someone you can really believe in. Her
deep sense of public service and deep caring about people and
issues comes through in everything she does.

There is a lot of talk in this race about liberals, centrists and
conservatives. I think the labels in today's political world are
irrelevant. It's not left, right or center anymore: it's a
question of solving problems that affect people's lives. Ann
embodies that new spirit of politics: hard working, no nonsense,
with a focus on getting things done.

There are at least two areas where it will make a huge difference
to have Ann Wynia in the U.S. Senate: education and health care.

When it comes to children and education, there are precious few
voices in the U.S. Senate. I know Ann will be one of the
strongest. As she says so well herself, "Knowledge and life
skills for a rapidly changing world are the greatest gifts we can
give our children."

On health care, it is painfully clear that Congress is not going
to deliver on its promise to Americans to pass legislation that
provides people the same coverage that members of Congress have.
Since this debate will continue in Congress next year, it is very
important that we elect the one candidate who supports universal
coverage -- Ann Wynia. She is the only one in the race who is
committed to providing for the country what Congress has, and
working toward the day when health care becomes a right not a
privilege.

When it comes to the suggestion that somehow Ann Wynia and I are
too similar to serve together in the Senate let me say this: I
know Ann Wynia, Ann Wynia is a friend of mine, and she's no Paul
Wellstone.

Seriously, Ann Wynia is her own person. She has a long and
distinguished career in public service including her position as
Majority Leader. She is an independent voice, with her own style
and own views. A simple comparison between the two of us is
unfair to Ann because it discounts a whole life of great
accomplishment.

In the end, it is in the direct interest of Minnesota to have
another voice in the U.S. Senate for children, for universal
health care coverage, for working people and against bad treaties
like NAFTA.
